Cale Dodds: “All Over”

Cale Dodds is not one to blend in with a crowd. Thankfully for us, this means he stands out with his first release as a signed artist with Warner Music Nashville. While most artists release a debut single, Dodds has dropped his first “double;” as he called them on his socials. Instead of just one new song, he has released two new songs – well, kind of… He re-recorded “Lying” from his EP “People Watching;” which he released independently in early 2016. “Lying” is accompanied by “All Over” for the “double.”

Dodds played “All Over” for me back in April when I visited Nashville. I texted him later that night and told him I couldn’t get it out of my head. I was immediately impressed. Bonus – the talented Corey Crowder, number 1 songwriter/producer, provides the background vocals, which blend perfectly with the song.

One of my favorite things about Dodds’ songwriting is his clever play on words. The lyrics “she’s all over me” aren’t what your first thoughts would lead you to believe. We hear of a guy who goes to “the same place we go every weekend.” Unfortunately, he sees his [former] girl there with her new guy.

I don’t wanna make it weird for her / so I’m gonna stay clear of her/ cause I might say somethin’ I regret/ like I miss you, wish you never left

He clearly wants her back, but sees that she’s better off with the new guy. The part that really hits you right in “the feels” is when you realize he simply just wants what is best for her, no matter what.

I don’t wanna fight the guy she’s with, cause she looks happy with whoever he is / and watchin’ him hold her / wish I could do it all over/ but she’s all over, all over me / she’s all over, all over me / looks like she finally found what she needs

“Lying” is my favorite song from the “People Watching” EP. I’ll be honest; I wasn’t excited when I heard this had been re-recorded. I loved the original so much, why mess with a good thing? Well, there’s a reason I’m the one who wrote this review, and why I’m not the artist or producer. They know what they’re doing! The new version of “Lying” is familiar (I mean, it is the same song), yet the difference is clearly heard.

For those of you who aren’t (yet) obsessed with the song like I am, it is about a young relationship that ends sooner than expected. “Lying” sings of love that promises to stay together forever. They believed they were telling the truth, and didn’t realize they were, you guessed it, lying. “Lying” is another clever play on words that I love.

Just the two of us lying on the hood of my car, under the stars, falling as hard as they were / didn’t know we didn’t mean it, swore we believed it, took it too far / she said forever, I said I’d never let her out of these arms / but the truth is we were just lyin’ / lyin’ on the hood of my car.

I don’t know all of the songs that are planned for Dodds’ debut album, but I do know that “All Over” and “Lying” were great choices for this initial release. I hope you’ll all love them as much as I do!
