EP REVIEW: McKenna Andrews “Who Knew”

Singer/Songwriter, McKenna Andrews, with fiery vocals and wicked guitar skills, can most certainly be deemed as the next girl on fire. This 17 yr old with vibrant hair to match her killer vocals is far beyond her years musically and she’s already making a name for herself. She has opened up for and performed with the likes of Randy Houser, Jana Kramer, Charlie Worsham, Brett Eldredge, and many more. McKenna released this self-written 3 song EP produced by four time Grammy Nominated Producer, Travis Wyrick, and there’s no denying the compilation of ballads with a soulful rock on tune sandwiched in between was the right direction for showcasing McKenna’s talent.

Who Knew” title track offers us an honest sound to McKenna’s voice. This ballad is wonderfully written and performed. I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t fall in love with the soulful story of a fairytale that’s too good to be true.

“well you fooled me once, said you’d never leave me, but that day I knew, love was never easy…”

“thought you were the one for me,
but it was all just make believe,
I guess all fairy tales don’t have a happy ending,
cause I never thought this love would end,
now we can’t go back to being friends,
so I guess it’s time for us to stop pretending,
and I can’t be with you,
who knew”

McKenna so simply displays her emotion in this song and a lot of people will be able to relate to the honest feeling of heartbreak woven into the lyrics.

In “That’s How I Roll” you can truly hear McKenna’s guitar skills. The guitar strums paired with her balance of easiness and grit in her voice makes this tune a great listening experience. Its hard not to imagine when McKenna performs this song live that the whole crowd must be rocking out with her.

Still Letting Go” last song on the EP and she certainly saved the best for last. There’s not too many ways you can describe it other than her voice being pure, simplistic, and real. This is one of those songs that you can sit back and listen to over and over. Like a great Adele song, beautifully written and performed with a sound sung with such real emotion and feeling.

“And I didn’t know it would hurt so bad,
and times like these could be so sad,
but I guess I’m holding on to hope,
and since the day you went away,
I acted like it was ok,
but my feelings now are startin’ to show,
I guess its just my heart,
still letting go”

This song is the hidden gem in the bunch and a song I believe will get McKenna recognized in the future. Nashville better look out because this girl is going to be the new kid on the block very soon.
