Ryan Hurd Shares the Best Advice He’s Ever Received

Ryan Hurd has been keeping busy over the last few years writing songs for Luke Bryan and Chris Young, just to name a few, all while releasing his own Self-Titled EP and building his catalog. While Hurd is out there sharing his music with all of us, there is something far more important that he is soaking up, and that is a wealth of wisdom from his friends.

Ryan Hurd surrounds himself with people who will not only push him as an artist, but also keep him grounded. It was something that songwriter Natalie Hemby once said that stuck out to the singer as one of the best pieces of advice he had every received. I am sure what he did not realize, was that this single piece of advice, would quickly became a bundle of lifelong lessons.

“Natalie Hemby always tells the story about being on a panel where the same question was asked. Don’t be an ass on the way up, and don’t be an ass on the way down. On a more practical note, someone told me one time to focus on getting better and not on getting somewhere, and that’s really been helpful in moments when I’ve felt hopeless or like things weren’t happening like I expected. It makes you focus on the work, which is always its own reward. Life is good and it’s just music, but it’s a really special thing to do every day, and I’m really blessed to get to do it.”

As a whole, this beautiful quote has special meaning, but much like a song, each line can stand on its own.

“Don’t be an ass on the way up, and don’t be an ass on the way down”

There is much respect to be had for an artist who takes time to learn, listen and accept guidance throughout their process. It speaks volumes in their music. For Hurd, the growth he exemplifies with each song he releases proves that he is not shy to let others in.

“Focus on getting better and not on getting somewhere”

With a world of everything at our fingertips, it is refreshing to hear that these specific words struck a chord with Hurd. Whether it be a song, EP, or full length record, the goal is the same and the reward means so much more when the work has been put in. It is a mantra to follow that not only allows you to grow professionally, but also personally.

A well-deserved amount of success has already come to the singer and songwriter with his current single To A T quickly climbing the charts. His passion does not go unseen. With Natalie Hemby and Ryan Hurd standing behind these words, they can easily be looked up to as role models in their industry. And now, Ryan Hurd has the important job of passing this message along to the next generation of artists who will soon follow in his footsteps.
