SINGLE REVIEW: Ashliegh Lisset “The Call”

Singer/songwriter Ashliegh Lisset’s world changed in an instant. Sgt. Paul T. Sanchez, her father, died while serving his second tour in Operation Iraqi Freedom. “My dad was a passionate soldier, and he died doing something he believed in. In a sense… that’s how I feel about my music.

Just days before he died, he suggested she record Carrie Underwood’s Don’t Forget To Remember Me. A line from Don’t Forget To Remember Me “… And make sure you tell Daddy that I’m still his little girl …” has a poignant meaning when you learn that Ashliegh’s family started the Not Forgotten Outreach, to honor Paul by helping disabled veterans and Gold Star families of fallen heroes heal through recreational and/or therapeutic retreats/workshops in Taos, New Mexico.

Ashleigh is an Ambassador of The Folds of Honor Foundation. Through scholarships and other assistance, the Foundation gives back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country. Fellow country artists Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, and Dierks Bentley are also part of the organization.

One of Ashliegh’s musical dreams is to sing with Carrie on the Grand Ole Opry stage. The Dallas, TX, native’s first single (released in 2013) was one Carrie co-wrote with Hillary Lindsey and Luke Laird. Kill The Headlights is about a couple needing the darkness of the moonlight to show their true feelings for each other. Sparks fly in the lyrics and from Ashliegh’s passionate, rich vocals that drive home the message to live in the moment. Her debut single remained in the Top 30 for eight consecutive weeks on Sirius XM’s The Highway.

Ashleigh’s Target On My Heart will remind you of yet another Carrie tune, Cowboy Casanova.

His finger is on the trigger and the gun is loaded

He’s going to blow it apart

And leave me in pieces I’ve got a target on my heart

And dodging his bullets

Like dodging the rain

There ain’t no way…

Her latest single, The Call, was released earlier this fall. Co-written by Lucy Hale, Zac Maloy, and Michael Daley. Lucy is both a singer/songwriter (You Sound Good to Me, Lie a Little Better) and actress (Pretty Little Liars – for which she won the 2015 Teen Choice Awards Choice TV Actress: Drama award). Zac, former lead singer for The Nixons (Sister, Happy Song), has co-written a number of songs including Carrie Underwood’s Temporary Home, and Tim McGraw’s Words are Medicine. The Call is an instantly relatable song. You work hard to reach a goal in life, but sadly the one person you always thought you’d be sharing the moment with is long gone.

THE CALL – LYRICS

VERSE:
I KEEP ALL YOUR PICTURES
IN THE BACK OF THE BOTTOM DRAWER
RIGHT NEXT TO THAT SWEATSHIRT
YOU SMILED EVERY TIME I WORE
I PUT THE SUGAR IN THE COFFEE JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE IT
GOT MY CUP ON THE COUNTER WITH MY PHONE BESIDE IT
AND I HOPE THAT YOU KNOW I WAS WAITING FOR YOU

CHORUS:
WHEN I FINALLY GOT THE CALL
I WANTED FOR SO LONG
I FINALLY GOT THE CALL
ALL MY DOUBTS SHOULD BE GONE
I FINALLY HEARD THE PHONE RING AND I COULD SEE
THAT ALL THE PLANS WE MADE ARE COMING TRUE
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE CALL IT DIDN’T COME…
IT DIDN’T COME FROM YOU

VERSE:
DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY NOW
IT’S NOT LIKE ANYTHINGS WRONG
HE’S ALMOST LIKE YOU BUT I KNOW THAT HE DOESN’T BELONG
BEHIND THE WHITE PICKET FENCE THAT I HAD IN MY HEAD
AND THE DREAMS THAT WE MADE LYING THERE IN YOUR BED
AND I HOPE THAT YOU KNOW I WAS WAITING FOR YOU

CHORUS:
WHEN I FINALLY GOT THE CALL
I WANTED FOR SO LONG
I FINALLY GOT THE CALL
ALL MY DOUBTS SHOULD BE GONE
I FINALLY HEARD THE PHONE RING AND I COULD SEE
THAT ALL THE PLANS WE MADE ARE COMING TRUE
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE CALL IT DIDN’T COME
IT DIDN’T COME FROM YOU

BRIDGE:
I SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT I FOUND SOMEBODY NEW
I SHOULD’VE GIVEN UP A LONG TIME AGO LIKE YOU

CHORUS:
I FINALLY GOT THE CALL I WANTED FOR SO LONG
I FINALLY GOT THE CALL ALL MY DOUBTS SHOULD BE GONE
I FINALLY HEARD THE PHONE RING AND I COULD SEE
THAT ALL THE PLANS WE MADE ARE COMING TRUE
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE CALL
IT DIDN’T COME
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE CALL
IT SHOULD’VE COME
IT SHOULD’VE COME FROM YOU
YEAH IT SHOULD’VE COME FROM YOU
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE CALL IT DIDN’T COME
IT DIDN’T COME FROM YOU
