SINGLE REVIEW: Blake Shelton “Gonna”

“I’m gonna take you for a date, take you for a ride
Gonna get you over there on the passenger side
I’m gonna put the radio on your favorite song
I’m gonna crank it on up and get you singing along”

Ten months ago Blake Shelton released Bringing Back The Sunshine, his eighth studio album. It debuted on top of the Billboard’s All Genre Top 200 and Top Country Album charts.

“So what’s it gonna take? What’s it gonna be?
We can bump it on the boulevard or kick it in the country
Me and you, you and me, money back guarantee
Love you every night in Daytona, I’m gonna”

Since September, three singles (Neon Light, Lonely Tonight, Sangria) have been released and each has been a #1 hit. Actually every single Blake has released since 2009’s Hillbilly Bone (duet with Trace Adkins) has topped the charts, including the multi-platinum hits Honey Bee, God Gave Me You, Sure Be Cool If You Did, Boys ‘Round Here.

“Love you all night long, til the crickets stop chirping
Girl, I ain’t just flirting, I’m certain
I’m working on a long term plan, gonna be your man
Gonna put a little rock steady on your hand”

Will the just released fourth single, Gonna, become the Oklahoma native’s 16th consecutive No. 1? That’s very likely, as it’s radio friendly and summertime (or anytime) flirty fun.

Blake’s first ever #1 song, Austin, was the debut single from his debut self-titled album 14 years ago. He was originally set to record a different song, but his label nixed it, thinking it too risky for a debut. The song he turned down? I Wanna Talk About Me was a #1 hit for Toby Keith.

Blake returns as a coach for the ninth season of NBC’s The Voice September 21. Team Blake artists have done very well – Meghan Linsey, Craig Wayne Boyd, Jake Worthington, Danielle Bradbery, The Swon Brothers, Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott, Jermaine Paul, Dia Frampton – since the show’s debut in 2011.
