SINGLE REVIEW: Rascal Flatts “Payback”

I remember seeing Rascal Flatts back in 2002 when they played in Union Grove, WI at the Racine County Fairgrounds. By this point they already had their self-titled debut cd out, and “Melt” had come out the same year that they came to the fair. It’s awesome to think back on that because they even had a little autograph table set up right in the open, it’s so cool to see how far they have come and how their band has transformed over the years.

If you’re still not familiar with Rascal Flatts, the band is composed of three very talented guys: Gary Levox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney. They have just released their 9th studio album, Rewind on May 13th, 2014 and are back with a new single, “Payback“.

I must say that with a first listen I was quite surprised with this track because it is nothing like I have ever heard from the guys before. Reason being, it’s got a little more rock, a little more twang, and a little hip-hop country rap feel to it. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, it’s an just very different from the past Rascal Flatts releases that everyone is familiar with.

Well, let me take that back…it’s got a little Banjo feel to it. At first it took me by surprise as I was listening to the song because I am so used to hearing the beautiful harmonies that the three guys create without all of the extra noise in the background. They have some of the greatest harmonies together that I have heard in my life. No matter what happens with this one, one things going to prove true, the guys have some of the best fans around so it’s not going to matter which way this song ends up going. I personally think it’s quite catchy and I’ll always find something to love about Rascal Flatts.

I’ve been a fan of Rascal Flatts since their debut cd, so it’s fantastic for me to hear the versatility of each track, including this one. I’m so happy to say that I’ve seen the transformation of Rascal Flatts being categorized as a boy band to the band they have become today. They’ve never been a boy band in my eyes. To me they’ve always been three of the most talented artists, with much individuality amongst them. Check it out for yourselves, we are going to let the fans decide. What do you think? Here are a few of the catchy lyrics to get your thoughts rolling:

Front of the line, straight past the bouncer
Lookin’ so fine that the band announced ya
Gotcha tight jeans on and your hair done right
All your girlfriends say we throwin’ down tonight
Let me guess, somebody done you wrong
And you’re lookin’ for a way to get your feel good on
Get some pictures on the Instagram and show him what he’s missin’
Straight no chaser, girl on a mission
