SINGLE REVIEW: The Band Perry “Gentle On My Mind”

The Band Perry is back with a new single, “Gentle On My Mind,” and I’m absolutely loving it. The title may sound familiar to you, and those who have followed country music from its very beginning will applaud The Band Perry’s take on the 1967 song that was written by John Hartford and covered by Glen Campbell, and Elvis Presley amongst others. Since the time I was little I’d sit and hear grandpa tell stories, and listen to bluegrass music, he’d even pick up the fiddle and play a tune, and this is the kind of country music he found the most inspiration in. He’d sit and tap his toes and sing along because it’s everything about this song; from the lyrics, to the traditional country sound and the bluegrass and folk feel to it, banjos and all.

I don’t think The Band Perry could have found a better fit for a song to cover than this one, they do a fantastic job of taking country back to its roots of telling the stories that made country famous. The sibling trio not only do this song justice, but sing it with honor, and pride, and respect to Glen Campbell. This song is filled with deep, strong, lyrics that’s quite different than what’s on country radio today–they bring it back to what it used to be and sing the heartfelt lyrics that begin to resonate in the hearts of all who sit down and take a listen that just may strike emotion within that may bring a tear to your eye.

It’s knowin’ that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleepin’ bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it’s knowin’ I’m not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you in the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind

Take a listen and let us know what you think!

  1. The Band Perry did a pretty good job of “Gentle On My Mind”. I just can’t help thinking of Glen Campbell when I hear it. I wish Alzheimer’s Disease would just disappear. IIt’s a shame that it takes so many people away from us! Good job Band Perry.

  2. I’d already fallen in love with their version on Grammy but it was relatively short. Really thanks The Band Perry for releasing this song as a single. for me this is a chance to listen to a full song. like Glen originally did years ago, this song is still a bluegrass one.
