Doug Bruce. Singer/Songwriter. Texas boy moved to Australia. Drummer moved to front man. Self-produced album maker. Seems this guy is all about change and growth. Seems he was Made That Way. His third album, Made That Way, was released January of this year and his second single was released this past May. Doug wrote 7 of the 13 songs. His music has been on the charts in Australia at #1, on the CMC countdown, he has been nominated Male Artist of the Year and Video of the Year in the 2013 CMC Music Awards. He was also nominated for CMC Oz Artist of the Year 2012.
Doug Bruce has a long history with country music that began at home in Aubrey, TX as part of a talented family of singers, songwriters and musicians with relationships with the likes of Red Steagall and Minnie Pearl. He spent some time as drummer and backup vocalist in Texas and Nashville. This led to performances on the Grand Ole Opry, opening for George Jones, Billy Yates, Travis Tritt and Charlie Robison amongst others. At CMC Rocks the Hunter 2013, Doug Bruce and the Tailgaters shared billing with Rascal Flatts, Big & Rich, The Band Perry, Jack Ingram as well as other Aussie artists.
Along the way, Doug met and married his Aussie wife and eventually they moved their family, now including 2 young boys, to Central Victoria where he continues to pursue the business of making music on all levels. Most recently he gifted us with his third and newest album Made That Way.
So let me paint you a picture of this small town Texan now living in the land of Oz. Sideburns, glasses, clean shaven and a cowboy hat. A good looking guy whose looks are reminiscent of the traditional and classic cowboy. Borrowing some quotes to describe the man and his music, he is like “Two shots of Travis with a Haggard chaser” (Music Connection, UK). “Doug Bruce is as country as horse sh**!” (Capital News, March 2012)
The songs all have that real nice twang that I like to hear in my country music. The title song off the album Made That Way is about lessons learned. The songs remind me of the country music I started listening to back in the 80’s. Leaning on tradition. They cover all the bases.
In no particular order, the remaining 12 tunes are:
Check Out at Five…working hard, no plans come 5 o’clock, weekend fun. Thank God I’m a Cowboy …a tune about temptation, repercussions, redemption. Alcohol Abuse…a dance and party song if I ever heard one, singing the praises of a night out. Another anthem song for when you hit the clubs with your boots on. Hold On To My Heart…this is the guy women seek. He is in love and doesn’t want to get hurt. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Here Comes the Fall…a stubborn fool of a man who has loved and lost, until he meets ‘this’ girl. There goes my pride and here comes the fall. And he risks it. Ghost Town….another song about lost pride. Seeking ‘her.’ Lost love being equated to a ghost town. 5 Star Honky Tonk…another quick stepping dance song. The best bar is the one where the dance floor is worn out, has a long neck atmosphere, it’s not a chain or franchise, bar stools aren’t sturdy. I have to agree. Born to Roam…woman wants a man who will settle down. Man cant. He is born to roam. Yet again, a cool dance song. Line dance or couple dance. Your boots will be roaming the floor with this one. Running Me Down…has a different vibe than the others. I like it. He isn’t gonna let a hottie with a body mess up his mind. He’s gotta get away but she’s running him down. I Wish I Was a Beer….funny! Lonely guy drinking his whiskey from a bottle. And the bottle of whiskey just wishing it was a beer cos a beer has fun…at the beach with a hot babe, tailgating at a football game, watching monster trucks. Not stuck in a smoke filled neon lit bar with a depressed and broken hearted guy. A bottle of whiskey wishing it could be a long neck for just one night. Money…the rent is late, bills past due, work work work. The woes of money when you don’t have it. The things you could have if you had money. Good things come to those who wait? Aren’t we all wondering if there is any truth to that? That’s Country To Me…This is a pretty song with lots of color and vivid language. Redneck, hillbilly, lots of friends like me. You and your friends will make this your song. For those of us who do not live in the country but live the life…this is our song. Lots of guitar and guitar picking, lyrics filled with people, places, stories and situations we have all known or wish we knew. Or maybe even wished we could forget. Love songs, party songs, lessons learned songs. Made That Way is our album. And you will sing and dance your way through it.
