MORGAN WALLEN: Concert Review

To say that Morgan Wallen is having a great 2017 is an understatement. Wallen is currently opening for Florida Georgia Line, recently made his Opry debut, his 1st single continues to climb the charts, and he is hard at work recording songs for his full length album debut. For those who are not familiar with Morgan Wallen, he was a contestant on the sixth season of The Voice, and is currently signed to Big Loud Records; which is also home to Florida Georgia Line and Chris Lane.

On Thursday ( 7.20.17) Morgan Wallen played a sunset beachfront concert for 96.9 Nash FM at the Windjammer on the Isle Of Palms in SC (This is the same place that Darius Rucker recorded an episode of CMT Instant Jam). An anxious crowd of 300+ packed this tiny beach bar to witness a future hit maker in an intimate acoustic setting. With the beach, and a gorgeous Carolina sunset as his backdrop, Wallen was at ease with the crowd and excited to play new songs.

Wallen played about a 45 minute set that included two songs from his 2016 EP. He also treated the crowd to a handful of new, unrecorded songs that he hopes will be included on his debut album. “Whiskey Glasses” is a fun up-tempo song about getting over a girl with an infectious sing along chorus. It includes clever tongue and cheek writing and double meanings and is available on his debut EP.

From the stage Morgan admitted that he enjoys writing, as well as recording, and was very excited to announce that former tour mate Dustin Lynch had recorded his aptly titled “Party Song.”  This Wallen penned song will be included on Lynch’s new album set for release later in the year. “Party Song” was very upbeat that could do well as a standalone single for Lynch.

Wallen admitted that he always covers Eric Church on his longer sets and went into the crowd favorite “Beer In My Hand.”  The rowdy crowd joined in by raising glasses and singing along.

New song, “Little Rain,” was my personal favorite. This is a sultry song that reminds listeners to slow down and enjoy time with their significant other. Sometimes all it takes is a little rain to force you to stay at home and catch up on what you have been missing.

Wallen then played new song “Up Down.”  “Up Down” is a swampy party song that Morgan has been playing with Florida Georgia Line this summer. It is about fishing and drinking, two of Wallen’s favorite things. “Pass the bottle of Jack and watch it go Up Down, Up Down, Up Down” goes the sing-a-long ready chorus.

Wallen also played new song “Make Em Like You” before ending the night with a strong performance of his current single “The Way I Talk.”  Something about a beach full of country music loving fans signing along sure brought a smile to his face.

Overall it was a great night! The beach and sand created an unforgettable experience, and I know that Wallen’s crowds will only be getting bigger over time. If you have a chance to catch Morgan Wallen live, please take advantage, you will not be disappointed. The sky is the limit for this talented singer/songwriter, and being friends with Chris Lane and FGL can’t hurt either.
