You released your self-titled, debut EP in 2022 – what was your decision process when it came to releasing original music – how do you decide when and what to release?

I knew I wanted to release a project of my own solo-written songs because part of my artistic process is enjoying the ride. I’ve grown so much as an artist and I’m growing up as a person, and these songs capture a season of my life I can tell is almost over. There wasn’t a lot of science that went into deciding when I would do it. I just found myself at the end of 2021 disappointed that another year had gone by without making an EP happen. That reflection lit a fire in me and I knew I was ready. I made it my goal for 2022 and the rest is history.

When writing, where does the inspiration come from and how quickly do the songs form from there?

My inspiration comes from potent feelings, sticky lyric ideas, and fictional plot lines or alternate endings to my stories. Some of these songs take years and some just hours. I think “Love is Messy” took me the least amount of time and it still took me a few weeks to nail down.

Was there a specific moment or event that inspired your first single “Wyoming”?

Wyoming is a true story about a summer love that ended before I was supposed to go visit this guy I had been seeing. It was such a fun romance but it didn’t have what it took to be anything long-term. Even though it is a sad song, I feel happy singing it because that was such an exciting time in my life.  It was many years ago now, so it doesn’t sting like it once did.

The first song on the EP, “Do I Miss The Rain” is a standout – you recently shot a music video for it.  What was that process like?  How much creative control did you take on?

Thank you! I worked with Costace Frank to make this video come to life and wanted to keep it simple and beautiful. I spent a few hours driving around town scouting for a field to twirl in.

Was there anything unexpected you learned while shooting a music video?  Or perhaps some fun behind-the-scenes memories?

I did not expect the sun to set so fast; I was basically running with my guitar through that field to catch the last of the daylight! I started to know what shots I wanted while we were shooting and I realized only after it just how much we had “winged it”. I was really impressed with what Costace was able to put together and feel like it represents the feel of the song well.

You went out on tour in 2022! What were some of your favorite memories?

The tour was one of the most fun and exciting weeks I’ve had in a long time. I played 5 shows across the midwest and got to see so many friends and family along the way. One of the best parts was just getting tighter with the band. This was our first time doing anything like this as a group and and by the last night we were at a level I’d never heard us before. I feel so lucky to have spent that time with such talented people.

Is there a certain venue you’d love to play some day?  Have you ever seen a show there?

I’m going to go big and say the CMA’s. I attended over the past couple years and was just in awe at the production level and talent. I’ve got a ways to go but I’m putting it out there into the universe!

What else can fans be looking forward to?  Any plans shaping up for 2023 already?

This year was full of “firsts” which is exciting but rarely is someone’s “first” their best. I’m already looking at 2023 as a year of taking everything I’ve learned and leveling up. There’s a lot more to come! I’m turning things up a notch this year for sure.
