Interview: Joey Hendricks

With the news of his monumental signing with Sony hitting right in the midst of quarantine, Joey Hendricks has been hard at work writing, recording, and planning for the future.  His debut single “Yours Or Mine” has quickly been gaining traction and he’s even getting us in the holiday spirit with his cover of “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).”  We were able to get a few minutes of Joey’s time to chat about the latest releases, performing virtually, and what he has coming next!  Check it out below and be sure to stream “Yours Or Mine” on your favorite platform now.

Hey Joey, thanks for chatting with us!  We’ve been loving the stripped version of “Yours Or Mine” – why did you decide to record this version?
Thanks for having me. Thank you! I just think that stripped versions of songs come across a little more clear. You can kind of hear what it sounded like when we first wrote it in the room.

Congratulations are also in order as you signed with Sony this year!  How has life already changed for you since making this huge career move?
Life has changed a lot since signing. I have a group of such talented people around me that help bring my thoughts to life and I get to put out music I love.

Was it difficult to ultimately choose what would be your debut single?
Not really. This song always felt like a good place to start the story. I can’t wait to share what else we’ve been working on though!

What was the inspiration behind writing “Yours Or Mine”?
It’s just about the beginning stage of a relationship and the back and forth of who’s gonna be the first person to call it what it is.

You also shot your first music video for the single, what was that experience like?
It was such a cool experience. I’ve never felt super comfortable in front of a camera, so that’s something I’ll definitely need to work on going forward haha.

How have you been keeping busy during quarantine?
Writing a bunch of new songs and eating and drinking too much. Whatever though, it’s 2020 right?

How does performing on live streams differ from the real thing?
I’m grateful because it’s a way to still connect, but it’s nothing like playing for a live crowd and getting that energy.

Though everything is up in the air, how do you plan to close out the rest of 2020?  What’s next?
Well, I released my version of a John Lennon song called “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” on 10/16. Aside from that, I plan to keep writing and putting out content that inspires me. Hopefully in early 2021 we’ll have some more music to share with everyone.

Thank you to Joey for the interview. Check out his video for “Yours or Mine” and “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” below!
